We've spent two days viewing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - the first full length, fully animated feature film. You've seen other cartoons. You've also seen lots of live action films, both in and out of class. So...

In what fundamental ways do animated films
tell stories differently from live action films?

You may use moments from both Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as well as other animated film to support your answer.

  1. The difference between cartoon and live action movies are the quality of the story. All though Cartoons are for kids the plot and the story were designed have people remember them when they were kids so that when they grow up they will remember how much they loved them. Live action movies these days dot even tell a story anymore they just suck. the idea was to make money by making movie Blockbusters and not good story telling in a movie. that is the difference.

    1. not all live action movies "suck". most of them tell a good story but then there are some of those that i guess arent so successful but it has always been like that in the movie industry

    2. The Descendants anyone? Midnight in Paris, No Country for Old Men, along with others are all live action movies with great story telling and came out in the last 5 years. I think you think live action movies are all blockbusters, which they are not. There are animated blockbusters too like Rango and Brave so I don't really see what you're getting at

    3. I somewhat agree with you. Yes cartons has a great story telling plot that one remembers for a long time, but there are also great movies tell a have a great story telling also. Maybe some of the recent movies stinks, but there are still great movies out there has a great story.

  2. In my opinion animation can tell a better story than a live action movie because it can do things that actors cant do that bring humor out in a story like in snow white the way the animals acted would have never been possible in a live action movie because that sometimes brought out a more funny side to the kind of serious-ish story. but in live action you cant do that even though i think i like cartoons over live action i still enjoy live action but i think that are pretty much trying to turn live action into animation with all the digital effects because some of it was not real real. i would rather have corny effects in a movie that tells a good story over a terrible story with really good try-hard effects that sometimes are just to much.

    1. I totally agree with you. Animated films can tell a better story. Even though the Snow White was a serious movie, but they could still make it funny without seeming rude.

  3. I think the thing that cartoons can do is invent their own little fantasy logic. Until after you see the film, you don't realize how impossible the stuff happening in the film, like the animals cleaning, is in real life. You get sucked into a colorful fantasy world where anything goes, and you buy it. Also, the stories are supposed to be less subtle. The colors are so blatant in what they are displaying that it gives the story away. From the dark, gaudy castle to the brightly lit, happy forest, these paintings and the colors behind them portray the story instead of the acting and writing.

    1. That’s so true. When I first watch animated films I didn't realize how unrealistic the film was. In a live action film too much unrealistic films can make a movie suck, but in an animated film, they could do it through the entire film and it still will turn out as a great film.

  4. Cartoons tell stories differently because none of it is real and they can make the characters do stunts and activities that are impossible to do in real life. The cartoons also can make up there own rules and laws and logic. They can switch the entire spectrum around, make animals do human activities and give them a voice. personally i prefer animation because the way you can tell a story and also show it on the screen is 100 times better in animation. Also they can make scenery so much more detailed and have it exactly how they want it. in animation you can literally make the perfect movie.

    1. I agree. Even if animals can talk in alive action film, they can't do half the things animals from an animated films can do. the detail of an animated film one of the biggest reason we love wacthing animated films.

  5. I think what cartoons do is something that can't be matched by real movies. Cartoons have the ability to bring the impossible to life, everything you ever imagined, every imaginary friend you ever had can be brought to life through cartoons. Which is why I think cartoons have always managed to stay alive, it's because with cartoons, children and even adults can, for just a little bit, live in a world where rules don't apply, where everything that is illegal in regular society, is suddenly legal. I think that I like real movies better, but I will always love movies like Toy Story, or Lion King, because of the amazing creation, the amazing stories, and the feeling of always being young. In animation you never have to grow up, and sometimes, with the pressures of high school, remaining young is nice! Animation will always bring a new light to making movies.

    1. I agree. Animated movies are always entertaining to watch, but at the end of the day you would rather see a live action film that is more realistic.

  6. Aside from the general look of the two types of movies, there are multiple differences between the two. In a cartoon anything is possible. If you showed a alligator stand up and talk in a cartoon people won't question it because it's what they expect. But if you put that same character in a live action film people won't respond the same way, instead they'll wonder why the director used that technique and what it added to the film. While I prefer to see movies that are more realistic, I always like enjoying a well made cartoon like UP. They entertain me in a different way than live action films do.

    1. That's so true. When i watch a cartoon and they do stunts that are really unrealistic, I don't even think about it or realize how unreal it is, but in a live action film it is obvious so we give off a different reaction towards it.

  7. The main difference between animated film and live action is that with an animated film you can do things that you cannot do with live action. When watching a live action in most cases it seems to be realistic and you really can connect with the character. In most cartoons characters can do whatever they want and they do not really follow any kind of law. This seems to take away from the connection you could have with the character. There for making the audience less attached to the character.

    1. I agree and disagree with you. In animated films the characters can do anything and yes, in live action films things are more realistic, but I don't think people are less attached to characters from a cartoon than characters from a live action movie. Look how many kids out there are obsessed with cartoon characters and even adults. I've never seen that connection with a live action character.

  8. When I watch an animated film or cartoon, I just think how there are things that can be shown and told that just aren't possible with a live action film. Animated films are a lot more colorful and, without sounding corny, are animated. You really start to love the cartoon world that is created no matter how fake or impossible everything in it might be. For example, when the dwarfs and Snow White are dancing around the house, there is no way a filmmaker could recreate this scene with live action. Not only would it not work well or turn out well, but that the audience just wouldn't like it as much. The audience might be able to connect more with the characters in live action, but they just won't be as entertained as they would be if it were animated. You just never know what to expect next in a cartoon.

    1. I totally agree with you. Live action films can create great special effects, but to limit before audience dislikes it because it's not possible. Basically, in an animated film the whole story is told through unrealistic things and still makes sense.

  9. The difference between animated movies and real action movies is that almost anything can happen in an animated movie and we kind of have to accept it. For example we watched snow white, if that movie was transformed to real life it would probably be really silly and weird but since its animated anything is possible. Animation movies have unlimited imagination. Real action movies are kind of limited because you have to work with what is real or with what you have.

    1. I agree. I think the reason why animated films are unlimited to anything is because we know that the characters aren't real so we don't expect them to do realistic things, but for a live action film, we know the humans are real so we expect them to do human things

    2. I totally agree with this because it is true that animations can really work with anything. Action films are more realistic and so there's limited topics to work with.

    3. i completly agree with you that in animated films you can do anything. In live actions film you have a limitation on the things you can do, because humans can do only so much.

  10. Again, not including the general look to the two there still are many differences. I think that the biggest is the story you are able to with animation, as opposed to real action. In real action I think you are limited in characters. Good animation can make anything a character in a film. That's why I think people love "Toy Story". We all played with toys as a kid and this movie brings that to life. Real action though, still has its advantages. I think that people want to see real action. People want to believe that it is possible for whatever is showing to happen. Animation loses this effect. With real action, you can really make the audience believe some impossible thing is possible. There are times where animation are best. But real action can be just as captivating

  11. I think the difference between an animated film and live action films, is that an animated films can do go things that live actions films can't do like create really funny sciences using animals; such as the scene where the animals were running to tell the dwarfs that the queen is trying to kill the princess and they understand what they were saying to say. The face expressions and the body language of the dwarfs were "price less" you couldn’t get that in a real live film. Animated films can create their own style and rhythm. Look at the scene where the woods turned into an alligator, in real live film you they couldn’t do that.

  12. I agree with you. Animation does lose its effect when it comes to realistic things. We all love animated films, but we still want to see things that actually happens in real life and that's where real action film over throws animated films.

  13. I think the difference between an animated flim and action film is that whereas action films are both packed with fighting, realism, action, and tons of constant movement; animated films have more flow and are colorful and just have unlimited imagination. When watching Snow White, it was almost as if they had their own little world; full of color and fun. For example, when the animals came to see why Snow White was crying, everything was blasted with color and the whole scene just flowed really nicely where action films are more realistic and give a vibe of the real world. Animations seem to create their own fantasy world, I feel like it helps viewers escape the real world and go into a world of humor, happiness, and color. I feel like any idea can actually work in a animation film because there really is no limit to imagination and fantasy.

  14. The main difference between animated film and live action is the story plot, where animated film is a cartoon. In a cartoon you can do virtually anything your imagination takes you. So when we use our imagination to watch the movie it stays in our head, becuase it imprinted in our mind. It does this better then live acton movies becuase they are real life with real life scenarios alot of the time. So when you go think back to it, not as many scneves stick to you. In live actuon movies there is so much movement and action, somethimes you dont even know whats going on the screen. They are also very limited in what do you can, so that makes animated film much more flexiable.
