1960s French Sci-Fi ... Discuss!

Today's online discussion encompasses this past week of 60s French sci-fi, as well as our entire sci-fi unit (lectures included). I'll start you out. Please participate with gusto.

  1. We've looked at these two films as a liberal swing of the pendulum, a reaction to the conservative 1950s. Here's my first question: Where is the pendulum now? Cinematically speaking, are we on a conservative/traditional swing, or are we on a progressive/liberal swing? Use examples from current films (sci-fi and otherwise) to support your responses.

    1. Currently we're at a progressive/liberal swing as there are many contreversial topics in films which cause the public to question their beliefs. Films are also very profane at times and can be explicit. I believe we aren't going into experimental films that much for the mainstream but there is still a sense of liberalism in all films.

      Delete
    2. i disagree with Boyan i think at this point the pendulum has gone away. Today movies are about how terrible they are and how much thay suck.

      Delete
    3. Agree with Boyan. I feel we're in a liberal trend, but nothing really shocks audiences anymore, that's how liberal we are. You can pretty much show us anything on the screens (uh, Human Centipede, anyone?) and audiences aren't going to leave the theatre in repulse or agony.

      Delete
    4. Unless it's a parody it can't be about how much it sucks. I agree with Boyan. I think film now is sort of liberal, but the experimental film is very cult and no mainstream theater plays these kinds of movies. Topics in movies are more controversial, and pushing the boundaries, especially in comedies, which doesn't always work.

    5. I would say we are at the progressive/liberal swing because through out the movie the aliens were not seen as bad even though they destroyed the Om's colony. If theis film was conservative then the aliens wouldn't have keep the baby and raise him as their pet.

    6. i believe the movie are on more of a conservative/tradational swing. the movies that have been coming out have been about aliens detroying the earth. Like for example Battle LA, and district 9 too, where the americans were against the alien creations. MOst sci-fi are now mainstream and involve the same basic themes over and over again

      Delete
    7. wow your right, I just never thought of it that way.

      Delete
    8. At this point i feel like its hard to return back to conservative values as many rights movements have reached or are reaching their goals which has caused our society to be overall liberal. Its hard to return to believing that things should strictly be one way anymore and movies reflect that.

    9. Most people see a movie to be entertained.I think many movie directors dont care whether what they are making a conservative movie or not, they want to find an audience that will be interested in it enough to pay to see it. I think audiences are interested in progressive topics because it is out of the norma and more interesting than the same old plotlines that are overused. Movies like The Human Centepede are progressive and so far from conservative film making, that they intruige people who are interested in taboo topics, that would not be found in real life.

      Delete
    10. I think that the pendulum is on a progressive/liberal swing. There are lots of films out that are controversial and question ones ideas or beliefs. The new movies coming out this summer quite a few of them are focused on aliens invading. Like in the movie battleship where there is an alien ship in the ocean and this one battleship has to destroy it. I think that most of the alien movies now are focus on aliens being bad.

  2. Were these two movies what you expected them to be?

    1. I expected Fantastic Planet to be way more experimental and abstract than it was. It followed a very organized plot line which was surprising and i thought it, in a way, subtracted from the experiment feel of the film. It was quite the odd the movie but i feel like it should have focused more on self reflection rather than on the plot given.

    2. the frist movie we saw with the blue people i realy had no expentations for but the other made no snese at all to me so also had no expentations to me ether

      Delete
    3. with Fantastic Planet i was expect a more abstract theme kind of just a surreal chain reaction movie

      Delete
    4. I thought Fantastic Planet lived up to my expectation of being a bad French film. I like the drawing style, but the animation is really choppy, and sometimes there is no backgrounds or depth. Also, I didn't care about anything going on. I enjoy the creativity and weirdness of it, but there was no character or story development at all, and it was really boring.

      Delete
    5. I dont think anyone could have accurate expectations for Fantastic Planet. It is so different from anything I have ever seen before. I did not expect it to have a plot thoug, and was pleasantly supprised that it was easy to follow. I was expecting it to be little excerpts of random things that didnt make sense because the trailer made it seem that way.

      Delete
    6. I was actually surprised when I watched Fantastic Planet because I expected it to crazy with no real storyline. However, it actually did have a point and a really interesting plot.

      Delete
    7. Personally, I disliked fantastic planet. It just didn't grab my attention at all. And I just didn't like the animation, and I thought it was a pretty poor excuse for a sci-fi movie. As for the other one, I didn't even know what was going on so i cant comment about that one

      Delete
    8. Yeah I expected Fantastic Planet as it being a joke and it exceded my expectations. As the movie went on the plot got better but at that pont i was already checked out of the movie. As far as La Jetee goes I havent ever se a movie like that before so it was a new experience that i enjoyed.

      Delete
    9. I honestly can't really explain Fantastic Planet. I didn't personally like it, but I thought it would have no story and not have any meaning. I think it was a good experiment, and I thought it was good just because there aren't any other movies like it, that contain that much creativity.

      Delete
    10. John I agree with your response

      Delete
    11. Not really, in fantastic Planet, I didn't expect the aliens would try kill the Om's, but I understood why they did it. I thought it was going to be like the aliens come to earth to find somthing and end up being close friends with the humans.

      Delete
    12. I agree with Riley. I wasn't very excited to watch this movie, and I left it with the same reaction. I tried watching this movie with an open mind, but it didn't catch my attention

      Delete
    13. With Fantastic Planet, yes. I was not excited to watch it in the first place and after watching it my feelings didn't chanGE. La Jetee was basicaly the same thing except I didn't know we would be watching it.

      Delete
    14. fantastic planet was what i expected it to be. an adult cartoon flim, with starnge aline creatures exploring and furthering their knowledge. i didnt expect much from the movie, so i wasnt dissappointed at it. it did have an interesting plot and charaters.

      Delete
    15. not at all. Fantastic Planet was better than i thought it was going to be. it held my attention and i really enjoyed it. i would watch it again. La Jette was bad, it was worse than i thought it was going to be. i couldnt even follow the the movie plot or dialogue.

      Delete
  3. If either of these two movies as released today, as they are (not remakes), would they find an audience? Use the popularity of current films to support your response. Consider mis en scene, story, tone, style, etc.

    Replies
    1. I can see Fantastic Planet having a following, but not La Jetee. Fantastic Planet is very similar to Cartoon Network's Adventure Time, in terms of the animation, the characters, and the unworldly setting. I feel La Jetee would still be a little bit too much of a bore for some people, but with art exploding as of late, Fantastic Planet would be precisely what the obscure art world flocks to today.

      Delete
    2. I think Fantastic Planet would have an audience of either people on drugs, or people who are curious and interested in a unusual movie that that is unlike anything else. I think the other movie would have a harder audience to find because most people are used to seeing a movie with the charaters physically moveing and without subtitles, so it would be hard to find people interested in a different type of cinematography like that movie.

      Delete
    3. I honestly feel like they would not bring in a huge audience because it's just not the thing that people want to see nowadays; violence, action. Fantastic Planet did have a couple but just looking at the trailer, I don't feel like I would actually go out and watch it. La Jetee would totally not bring a huge audience either because it is just pictures and doesn't have any movement or an interesting plot.

      Delete
    4. Fantastic planet would probably not find an audience as it's outdated in its animation is too vintage for current audiences. The idea of aliens is also over used in our time so there is less of an audience that wants to see more aliens. La Jette would have an audience in my opinion since the movie has the twist that audiences love in our modern world. I believe its black and white photos and mystery along with the narration would really captivate audience members. Its style alone is very self reflective and people in our time are very self orientated and focused on self development.

      Delete
    5. I agree with Dakota, I could see Fantastic Planet playing on Cartoon Network, just because I think people who watch cartoon network have an intrest in movies like that. For La Jetee, I think it would be harder to find an audience because I feel like the idea was neat but the movie itself bored me too much. The idea of the movie was good though. Also, personally I don't like subtitles, and especially in this movie, its harder to follow.

      Delete
    6. I think both would because not everyone is into movies like "Valentines Day" or "Transformers". I enjoy those kind of movies but at the same time I also like movies from Sundance and documentaries. Now I wouldn't want to see these but I'm sure others would because this could be the types of movies they enjoy.

      Delete
    7. I just don't understand who would honestly watch 'The Adventure of the Oms' on cartoon network. It is in no way a child movie or something that a kid would be interested in. Its art style is bad in my opinion and its story is based on events that aren't that exciting. I was, at many points in the movie, watching the clock tick away in order to be done with the movie. I don't think it can capture a kid's attention let alone be a show. What would there be for the show to convey?

      Delete
    8. well i think la jette wouldnt go anywhere, merely becauase there was already another movie that had similar plots, and a 3rd would be overkill. Unless they changed the plot alot more (like they do to movies nowadays). If fantastic planet was remade it would go somewhere becuase it has a cool plot and characters. and also the wierd animals creature things are awesome.

      Delete
    9. Honestly critics would rate Fantastic Planet so low it would get destroyed in the box office. Even if it found an audience, i don't the movie would generate a big enough crowd to make it.

      Delete
    10. I don't think any of the two films would get an audience. Fantastic Planet wouldn't get an audience because with all the new sepical effects and the stereotype of aliens, people would expect to see more because we are so use to seing more. La Jetee wouldn't get an audience because it is in french and there are no movements. Nowadays people love to see moevement, explotions and excitement and La Jete has none of that.

      Delete
    11. I don’t think that fantastic planet would even make it to theaters, but besides that fact the way it is made is so outdated that I think it would be a shock for an audience watching it today. Therefore I don’t think that there is an audience for this movie

      Delete
    12. to be completely honest Fantastic Planet would be a blockbuster i think. it would be a hit because it is just so different and people would like that. i feel like a lot of the films coming out right now are similar in one way or another. Fantastic Planet is weird, funky, and just a little messed up but thats what makes it so interesting and different.

      Delete
  4. I know we were joking about re-making Fantastic Planet, but is it possible? They did remake La Jetee as a Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt movie...

Would a re-make of Fantastic Planet be able to exist? And, if so, what changes would likely occur?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I actually would be interesting in seeing a full length movie filled with human and computer generated actors. I think it would be possible and turn out well, although I think it would look a little like Avatar...

      Delete
    2. I think a remake is possible. They could make it in live action using computer generation for the landscape and the giants. This movie did have some plot, and I think writers have a chance to improve this movie and actually make it good with good story and characters.

      Delete
    3. I mean you could remake anything, but that doesn't mean you should. I think in this situation it wouldn't make it any more enjoyable if you remake it. I think they should leave it alone because it takes away from the authenticity of the original.

      Delete
    4. I think this movie could be remade. The animals and world they created was really unique and cool, and I think with modern tecnology and annimation, they could make this movie realistic and cool, as if we were literally o another planet. I think it would have a similar feel to Avatar.I think people would be interested in seeing this as a modern day film, because it has a great storyline and with todays special effects, it would feel real. This movie would be crazy in 3D.

      Delete
    5. ok the moie would feture bruce willis, siver stalone, Arounold swanagwer, Tommy lee jones , and Will smith. It be a movie about a revoution against the blue people and Tommy lee jones , and Will smith will be the men in black trying to come up with a peace treaty for the two forces.

      Delete
    6. A remake is possible, to make the movie more animated and using more computer graphics. I thought the same as Danny, as I watched this movie. If they made a remake, it would really look like avatar.

      Delete
    7. The movie would have a lot less nudity. I feel the movie will have a more survival and war tone. The blue people would probably look more ridiculous and would probably have a lot more high tech cities.

      Delete
    8. With the technology we have today, a remake would be possible. I personally would enjoy seeing a remake because the things they created in the animation were so interesting; like the animals and trees and such. I also agree that this would very similar to Avatar.

      Delete
    9. I'm against remaking anything, but in this case, this movie begs for improvement. This movie has the potential to be more than what it is that I think with the right director (i.e. not Michael Bay) that it could be a lot like Avatar or maybe better. The question is do we need another movie like that though?

      Delete
    10. I do not think we need another movie like that. I watched Avatar, and yes it was better than Fantastic Planet, but after watching it for too long, I stopped paying attention and was waiting for the movie to be over.

      Delete
    11. I beleive that it would be possible, however it probably be nothing like the original. It would be cool to see how it would look with people instead of animation and with todays cg technology, but I feel like it just wouldn't be the same as the original.

      Delete
    12. If Fantastic Planet were remade then it would just be a CG thriller and it would lose the faint message it had. I don't think it would be successful especially if people looked at the original. For the most part people would get discouraged if they watched the original.

      Delete
    13. I do think a remake of fantastic Planet is possible. The remake would be very similar, but different at the same time. I think the remake wouldn't be a cartoon, the aliens would look differently, how the people Oms got there colthes would have been different and I think they wouldn't call humans Oms, they would call them humans.

      Delete
    14. i know a remake is possible but it would be tricky. if i were to make the remake i would use humans and not a cartoon. i would keep the story line the same but i would modernize it a touch. the scenery would be a little different and some of the unneeded scenes would be cut. also all the characters would have clothes that cover their bodies.

      Delete
  5. i did not like either of these movies at all. i think that was because i dont like these type of movies i think they were made well but i just did not find a like to them.

    1. i agree and disagree. i liked Fantastic Planet to a point but i hated the other one. they were both made well and fantastic planet held my attention. the other film was just god awful and i almost fell asleep.

  6. These two movies had more story in them that I expected. They both had interesting plots and interesting ways of capturing each scene and frame. Even though they are not what I usually watch. They were interesting and I felt that no matter how ludicrous it seemed you just couldn't take your eyes off it.

    ReplyDelete
  7. i think now were on the traditional/conservative swing because the movies these days are all very alike none of them are different. none the movies ive seen lately have been like 'wow that was mind blowing and awesome and i learned something from that'

    2. F'sho Fantastic Planet. this kind of movie is actually right up my alley-- international and/or animated pictures.

      Delete
    3. fantasic planet definitly because it really catches your attention with the colors, wierd animals and wierd plants and everything was wierd and intersting and in the other movie it was black and white with a monotone narrator.

      Delete
    4. I think definantly Fantastic planet because it had a way better story line and was interesting. With La Jette, it didn't interest me as much and was kind of everywhere. I couldn't really follow the movie like I was able to with fantastic planet.

      Delete
    5. These two, while creative, are the worst 2 we've seen in class, even worse than Maltese Falcon.

      Delete
    6. Fantastic Planet was better because it is so differnt from any other film.

      Delete
    7. Fantastic planet for sure! i hated la jette, it was just boring. Fantastic Planet was interesting and was like nothing i have ever seen before.

      Delete
  9. I honestly cannot picture a remake. I feel like the idea that the movie bases itself on is outdated and the whole premise is just set in stone for that time period. It would be changed to fit demographics today so it would be dramatically different then it was in the time it was created. I just can't see it but maybe some people can and would go to see it.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I disagree Holly wood would somehow find a way to remake the movie and everybody would go see it and it would suck.

      Delete
    2. Yup. I agree with Ali, nowadays anything is possible to remake with everything we have now. Also, Hollywood would twist everytning up; adding a bunch of random violence or whatever to satisfy audiences.

      Delete
    3. I think given the right producers and director, anything is possible. The problem with Hollywood today is that it is the opposite of what it was. People only make movies for money not because it's fun and they enjoy it. I think for this reason and older director like Spielberg or Peter Jackson could turn this artsy French movie no one has heard about into a masterpiece or at least a huge hit.

      Delete
    4. Yeah it is possible to remake it for sure. And people might go see it. They made Avatar, so they can remake this.

      Delete
  10. La Jetee was a pretty boring film to follow but I'm glad I watched it because it was a good experience and something to just keep in mind. If this film wasn't all pictures, and it actually had motion and moving pictures, do you think it'd be more interesting?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey luckily you have the option to watch a Bruce Willis remake of it...might want to check it out if you want to see if I'd be more interesting!

      Delete
    2. What I liked about La Jetee is that it showed a movie doesn't have to fall within the 90-150 minute mark, and for that I liked it. I really was hoping to get a little more out of it, though.

      Delete
    3. I think it would totally be mor interesting if it had moving people and not pictures.

      Delete
    4. I agree. It was hard for me not to sleep while watching La jetee. It would have been interesting if it was in english or had motion.

      Delete
  11. Would anyone else be interested in seeing a movie in the format of La Jetee with pictures? It doesn't have to be a sci-film. It could be any genre...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes. very much so, actually. because especially nowadays, zooming and using photos as moving images is exceptionally easy, and you could do it in such an artistic way. I love this idea for it. 'cos then at least the theme or plot could be a little more exciting.

      Delete
    2. To be honest Danny...no. I am not interested at all.

      Delete
    3. Not really, I think the picture idea bores me. The pictures was a good experiment but honestly, I think it's really boring. Maybe if it was an actual movie, like without pictures, it could of kept people's attention.

      Delete
    4. Nope. It was an interesting experience to watch something like this but I would not want to watch another film like this. If I wanted to see a slideshow, I'd go to history class. Film's are suppose to entertain or interest, a moving picture film is what captures people- not a bunch of pictures.

      Delete
  12. i didnt think fantastic planet would actually have a storyline, i thought it would be a bunch of random events that would happen and i would be really confused but it was a pretty good movie. the other movie we watched i didnt like because it had no point to me and it was confusing and not entertaining.

    1. agreed as much as i hated fantastic planet i have to admit i thought it wopuld be worse.

    2. I agree entirely. As much as I was (happily) anticipating a movie that jumped around insanely with just bizarr-o graphics, what I actually got was a story that made a LOT of sense (and left me feeling complete after watching, instead of "longing" for more) and was very sweetly illustrated..animated....drawn...

      Delete
    3. i was completely ready for a bad trip movie but i was happy it wasnt but i was also dissapointed because i mean bad trip movies are so fun to watch

      Delete
    4. I completely agree. Fantastic Planet was like nothing i've seen before. I thought it would be completely random with no plot or story. La jette was way too confusing and hard to watch.

      Delete
  13. I think that it would be very interesting to see a live action version of Fantastic Planet. It would keep the audience’s attention more in my opinion. Also it would show more emotions than the animated version, and I think that the character development would be far superior.

  14. Neither one of the movies were what I expected, but in their own ways. Fantastic planet was not what I expected, but in a good way. For some reason I beleived it would be boring, no story or moral, and no character developement. It was the complete opposite. It actually had a story, a moral, and character developement. La Jette was unlike any movie I have ever scene. I had mixed feelings about this film. At some parts the stills were either boring or anoying, and in others they were awesome. The story was very interesting. In the beggining I had no idea what was happening but as the movie progreesed, I had a better understanding of the plot. Overall, I enjoyed both films and both were nothing like I've ever scene or could imagine.

And yeah I completely agree except there were only 3 people in Planet of the Apes and there were millions of humans in Fantastic Planet. I definitely see where you are going with this

    6. and I liked that the aliens were blue, because it was almost as if it was a predecessor to Avatar... which really didn't interest me in any way, shape, or form... a little before its time, which is really sweet.

    7. I understand, Ali. I'm kidding around. I think you should use Word becuase then it's easier to check your spelling. By the way, does that giant head in Fantastic Planet remind you of the destroyed Statue of Liberty in Planet of the Apes.
